Hi! My name is Danny Ng Wann Sing and I am currently 19 years old. Currently, I am a representative of Malaysia in Table Tennis and studying at Sunway University. Growing up, I was a child who was not very active in sports as I had bronchitis. One day, my senior passed me a table tennis paddle and told me to give it a try. After that incident, I got hooked into table tennis. It also improved my bronchitis as it occurred less frequently. And thus, playing table tennis became a big part of my life since I spent most of my childhood playing it.
Initially, I didn't believe that I had the potential for table tennis as I was new to it. But I was told that I had a significant advantage as I am a left-handed player. I found out that there were only a few left-handed athletes in every sport and thus, it motivated me to pursue my sports career. I joined the table tennis club and one day, I was selected as a representative for my primary school for a competition. I won the competition and had my first taste of victory. This caused me to participate in more competitions such as Sea Junior and other junior competitions. I gained a lot of achievements and proved to my family and myself that I am capable of being a winner. The achievement that I am most proud of was when I won a bronze medal in the Under 15 single category at Sea Junior 2017. It was the first time that I represented Malaysia in an international competition. Even though I could not enter the finals, a bronze medal was acceptable for me, and it motivated me even more to keep fighting and strive for greater success. To reach the goal I placed for myself, I had to sacrifice my leisure time to pursue it. I had to decline my friends for gatherings, and they would blame me for not being there having fun with them.
Due to the intensive training and competitions, I had a knee injury during MSSM when I was 14. My injury was named as Sinding Larsen Johansson and was caused by multiple reasons such as over usage, over tightened muscle, and lack of muscle. I once took a five-minute timeout because my knees were so bad that I could feel pain even while I was standing. Despite my injuries, I have never withdrawn from any competition because I understand that every match is important for me and my teammates, and I can't let them down or even myself down. Due to this injury, both of my knees felt painful even when I walked, and I needed to apply knee guards or taping to reduce the pain. To be honest, I considered quitting table tennis due to my injuries. However, I am fortunate to have my parents and coaches by my side, allowing me to continue till today.
When I turned 16 years old, I reached a plateau. During this year, I felt frustrated and disappointed with myself as I did not achieve anything. I wanted to give up on sports but fortunately my coaches pulled me up and encouraged me to persist in table tennis. Finally, I achieved a bronze medal in the single category of under 18 in a national competition. It was not what I had targeted for, but it is an encouragement for me to keep moving on. It felt like I was finally breaking through and proving myself to everyone when I was awarded a medal. I'm overjoyed and appreciative because it shows that my perseverance in table tennis was not wasted.
At that time, my coaches and parents encouraged me to apply for the Sports Scholarship and that was how #MySunwayStory began. The Sports Scholarship is more than just a fee deduction, it is also an award for all my hard work and dedication that I had put in. The proudest moment that I have in Sunway so far is when I still can maintain my CGPA above 3.0 in my studies. Moreover, I think I would not pursue tertiary education if I was not offered this scholarship as my family was not able to afford the fees of the courses that I preferred. Therefore, I am grateful to Sunway University for giving me this opportunity to pursue my studies and also enjoy the excellent amenities and surroundings they have. I enjoy utilizing the facilities that Sunway provided, especially the washrooms due to the cleanliness and they are all comfortable to use.
Last but not least, do mark my words: Go ahead and do whatever you love, and remember to live for yourself, not for others because YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE.
