When you walk into the Sunway campus as a freshman, you can’t help but feel like a little fish in a big pond full of smarter, more talented and more capable people. It’s hard to imagine being able to make a ripple in a place filled with a history of successful people. That’s how I felt during my first semester in my A-levels programme in 2016.

You’d think that a university with so many students would be formal and impersonal. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the warmth and welcome shown by the staff of Sunway University. With previous encounters of boring, harsh, unreasonable and uninformed teachers, the services given by the lecturers were interesting, engaging and personal. They weren’t just interested in explaining their subject, they were passionate about it as well. Many of my lecturers gave extra knowledge that was not in the syllabus, but real-life experiences that made the subject matter relatable. This stimulated my interest in subjects that I previously did not care for. A program of note is the mentor-mentee program, where each student was given one-on-one help for their university applications. For someone who had no clue about how to apply, this was definitely a welcome help.

The star point of my pre-university in Sunway was every person you encountered, whether lecture, or administration staff, or scholarship committee, were committed to see everyone’s potential. Here at Sunway, you are treated as an adult, with your merits they seek to build, and even your weaknesses that they seek to train. To be honest, when I was applying for my scholarship to my degree programme, I felt like no one special with nothing to offer to Sunway. However, the fact that my lecturers believed in me and encouraged me to apply for the scholarship as well as the kindness of the scholarship committee that made me feel so comfortable during the interview built up my confidence.

It was during my studies in Sunway College that I confirmed my passion for psychology, and the encounters with the people here made me sure that I wanted to do my degree in Sunway University. Being awarded The Chancellor’s Scholarship of Sunway University & Lancaster University was definitely a bonus to the experience received. I am definitely grateful for everyone who made my studies in Sunway the best time of my life. I am Samantha Kaan and this is #MySunwayStory.
