As a student, a quote that has always been my to-go line was ‘’Value the Big 3: Zest, Grit, Collaboration.’’ Growing up, I was raised in Pelabuhan Klang, Selangor by my strict Asian family who strongly believes that education will lead us to a comfortable life in the future. Likewise, I have always been active in school even though I did not particularly enjoy it.
My peers have always described me as slightly introverted, low confidence, and yet always curious in all aspects of life. When I was 13 years old, I discovered Project ID which is a collaboration with Teach For Malaysia (TFM) which I have taken interest in. This empowers students in small communities like myself to achieve career aspirations and also accept challenges. Moreover, I challenged myself to do archery competitively, and ultimately, I decided to work hard in both my studies and archery. To my surprise, I did well in my studies and balanced it well with archery.
Just like every student, I also had my fair share of tough decision makings with my life especially pursuing tertiary education. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always been told to do medicine but unfortunately, I was not able to qualify. Due to that, I had asked for an enormous amount of advice and opinions from teachers and I felt very lost with the direction I was heading in life. During my family’s financial crisis, I applied for various scholarships online hoping to receive one. Luckily, a teacher of mine who was associated with Project ID pushed me to apply for the Sunway-Teach For Malaysia scholarship as my last shot. As to my surprise, I received the scholarship and was offered to pursue my diploma studies at Sunway College.
I am very grateful for the opportunity that I was given because if I had not had this chance, I would not be doing the things that I currently enjoy and I would have no goals for the future. I love being a part of Sunway because this is where I had my best moments in life. Sunway makes me feel at home and not to mention, the facilities and resources provided on campus have been useful to students like myself. Last but not least, the environment of the campus and interactive classes will be something that I truly miss during this hard time of the Covid-19 pandemic. In #MySunwayStory, I would like to remind myself and fellow juniors to “Be Zest, Have Grit and Enjoy Collaboration” in life as a student and keep this close to your heart, “good food brings you good mood”.
